The First Ammendment, Defended by a Pakistani

“I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.” – Evelyn Beatrice Hall

The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, ensuring that there is no prohibition on the free exercise of religion, abridging the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble, or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances. It was adopted on December 15, 1791, as one of the ten amendments that constitute the Bill of Rights. But meh who cares? Obviously the new Authoritarian Left pack of social justice warriors don’t. They would rather keep up with their persona of ‘diversity is our strength’ yes it is! But you got it all wrong. Free speech is the reason people come to this country. They can say things, they can be and pursue whatever they like and love in this country. They obviously can’t do the same thing in the places they ran from to come here. Theocratic and Fascist dictatorships don’t actually allow this liberty that people are offered in the West or Europe, and you want to put constraints on it? Censor arguments? Stop people from expressing their harmless opinions because words hurt feelings? Control what they say, express and associate themselves with? Inevitably controlling what people think? That is not a very liberal idea on any political scale. Hate speech confusion; I don’t even know if this is a thing or not. Yes in some far-fetched,very uncommon cases there are people that defame someone on the basis of traits that are out of their control; pigment of your skin, gender and sexual orientation. But if we do not open the platform of exchanging ideas for everyone, we wouldn’t know for sure what is going on in their heads. If they don’t speak up their ideas, how would they be criticized? And hence debunked. Rather they would remain to grow and keep their mindsets narrow and bigoted. Not only that but the expression ‘hate speech’ forces to establish a line between free and hate speech not only is that line impossible to put in place but it gets us into the trap of more confusion and blurs us out from the real issues that are being faced at hand by the people everyday. Necessity of the unimportant; It’s ironic how these people would prioritize facts over feelings. What they consider unimportant is a necessity without which no set of nation can prosper in this growing age of technological and scientific advancement. We truly live in modern times ruled by medieval men. It’s really ironic how people post about communism being the best system of government out there with their iPhones and MacBook (needless to say they are the products of capitalism) when none of them have actually visited a communist state in their whole life. This ideology combined with identity politics and censoring free speech, punishing people for making jokes, criticism, scrutiny on the religion of minorities is an utter recipe for disaster. Trigger warnings and micro aggression are the last nails in the coffin of this overwhelming regressive left. It also forces upon a binary form of thinking in people which makes them label one person guilty/oppressor/tyrant and the other as innocent/victimized/faultless and vice versa. Unfortunately this leads to the trickle down effect of painting every thing as black or white and leaves no middle ground for intellectual debate. I conclude this short article by emphasizing as much as possible that free speech means all forms of speech; stupid, bigoted, false, true, intellectual, enlightening in some cases. In the light of politics in UK, a simple example can clear this up. Nigel Farage is Nigel Farage not Nick Griffin .He and his party were openly racist, facist and bigoted. When they were aired on question time.BBC had to face a lot of slack for platforming them. But you know what? Today no one bothers on Nick griffin and no one votes for BNP which is no longer a competing force in UK politics.I can illustrate a thousand examples like these. The whole point is that we need to stand for complete and absolute freedom of speech,no matter what.Only then and then can we win the war of ideas. As a classical liberal and Pakistani guy who has a keen interest in world politics I have a humble request to all the minorities living overseas and those whom I share my nationality with to fight for their right and fight for the reason people flee their motherland and immigrate into these all -together foreign countries of different language, culture, values and even religious backgrounds. That reasons ,ladies and gentlemen reading, this is Free Speech! I don’t care if you are a communist, socialist, fascist even a follower of nazism .I don’t care if you are a religious apologist.I don’t give a rats ass if you have a convention for Denying the Holocaust.Words do not equate actions! write that somewhere.I’ll come to your platform and you have that conversation all you want.I will debate you. That’s how you do it. That’s how you promote good ideas and scrutinize bad ones.So let us reinvoke the classical socratic method of debate of refute, reason, logic and rebuttal.Let us all follow the philosophy of Voltaire if we are to prosper as independent people of independent nations who do truly think for themselves: ‘I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it’.
